Ocean Relaxation at Its Finest How does being on the water have such a calming meditative effect on you? Your brains prefrontal cortex is activated when listening to the sound of the ocean. This area of the brain is associated with self-refection and emotion. Ocean waves generate negative ions. What does this mean? The peaceful state our bodies feel from being at the beach are a result of molecular changes that are happening in our bodies. The oceanโ€™s waves produce negative ions which accelerate our bodies ability to absorb oxygen.
