crime and punishment fyodor dostoevsky i’m so mad that no one told me this is good. I mean, i knew it was a classic, but i didn’t know it was so entertaining. i relate to raskolnikov. (not great, i know.) not in the way of thinking of myself as above the law and murdering because of it, but because i give too much value to coincidences and place too much blame on fate instead of my own choices. also idk if it’s just this translation, but i think this breaks a record for novel that uses variations of the words “hastily” the most in history. i’ve read some dostoevsky before, so i thought this might be a lil too christian for me but i love the way he used religion as a way for raskolnikov to reconnect with humanity rather than a way to preach and guilt. i still don’t get the way russian names change into their shorter and longer forms. i could say a million more things. maybe i’ll start making video form reviews one of these days. 9/10

the husbands secret liane moriarty the women in my family are always recommending me these books about lying, cheating, murdering men. i don’t really enjoy them. the men in my family are such good guys that it must be easy for their wives to read about these events because they feel so far removed from them. i find them too relatable, so i get too emotional. i had no issues with the writing though; i could potentially read something from this author again, but she does seem awfully obsessed with weight. the ethical nuance the story brings up will have me pondering for a long time 7/10

conversations with friends sally rooney this one’s pretty polarizing, so i feel like i should have a strong opinion, but i honestly don’t. i found it mid. i will say, though, that i really appreciate the endometriosis representation. i knew the mc had endo the moment she started talking about her pain, because it sounded exactly like my pain. the only time i’ve heard others with endo talk about their pain is on reddit so it was very surreal to read something so relatable. there’s something cathartic about reading someone describe the exact pain you’re currently feeling. 6.5/10
