Speaking Dog: When you don't like what your dog is doing and you yell at them, that's kind of like barking and growling at them. Once they stop what they are doing and look at you, even for a second, the behavior has stopped, so the punishment continuing is gonna be confusing, causing them to think that your reaction is more about you than them and making them want to leave. Once they look at you, praise them for giving you their attention and give them another behavior that they can be successful at, something easy like sit or stay, depending on your dog's easiest fallback behavior. Continue praising them and move on to more difficult behaviors and higher reinforcements. We want our dogs to understand that listening to us is fun!
