I worked at a health food store in downtown Toronto for about a decade. One summer a sweet, South American man was hired as a sous-chef at a restaurant on the street. He'd come in almost daily to buy ingredients before the dinner rush. He'd shyly smile and try to converse in broken English. We mostly communicated with gestures and smiles. A few times he brought me little boxes of chocolates and candies. One day there was this cute rose pin hidden in the bottom of the box. He was only there one summer, but I still have the pin and think about him on occasion. Let that be a lesson gentlemen - if you're sweet on a gal and she's unavailable, it still doesn't hurt to be yourself and make an impression <3
